2016–2018

Mentors   Dr. Avtanski & Dr. Poretsky

Recent Work

Dr. Garcia’s formal education was taken in Mexico, where she graduated from Universidad del Valle de Mexico campus in Hermosillo, Sonora. Prior to joining Friedman Diabetes Institute, she conducted her clinical rotations throughout hospitals in the Medical Center of Houston, Texas, where she became acclimated to the American medical system and began her studies in research.

Along with her mentors, Dr. Garcia is currently participating in research projects related to understanding the mechanisms of obesity-induced insulin resistance, particularly the role of resistin adipokine and its interaction with adenylyl cyclase-associated protein (CAP) 1. As it is nowadays appreciated, adipose tissue is an important endocrine organ, secreting various hormones and cytokines. Among them, resistin is a major mediator connecting adipose tissue with the progression of insulin resistance observed in obesity. The findings from these projects will be important since today obesity is a worldwide epidemic. Additionally, Dr. Garcia will be involved in other projects, such as the study of the role of irisin, in human reproduction.
